Self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) are mixtures of oils and surfactants, ideally isotropic, and sometimes containing co-solvents, which emulsify spontaneously to produce fine oil-in-water emulsions when introduced into aqueous phase under gentle agitation.

Emulsion particles can be of either micro- or nano- size, depending on the composition of the system. These formulations circumvent the dissolution step in the gastro-intestinal tract, but are still dependent on digestion.
